President Nicolas Maduro-led government, which is locked into a dispute with the Opposition over the outcome of the presidential elections, has blamed its political rivals for the power outage. Communications Minister Freddy Nanez described the incident as "electrical sabotage." "We are reporting that at approximately 4:40 am (0840 GMT) today, Friday, August 30, an electrical sabotage took place in Venezuela, a sabotage against the national electrical system, which has affected almost the entire national territory," Nanez told this to a state-run channel. Venezuela has experienced frequent blackouts in the past, with the Maduro government often attributing these power cuts to unproven conspiracies aimed at overthrowing him.
