Many times we come close but on the rare occasion, we hit the nail dead on the head! Three generations of Boers and good friends scout out and get permission to hunt a prairie pothole in northeastern South Dakota. Our annual Duck hunting or waterfowl hunting trip starts out the same way every year. We leave a couple of days early to scout the area to keep all of our ducks in a row. The 3-hour drive north typically gets dissected with a stop in Watertown for lunch and fuel then on to Mellette, just south of Aberdeen South Dakota. The Mellette-Northville area may seem like the flattest place on earth but it does have quite a bit of wildlife if you stop long enough to look. Mansfield Slough is roughly 20 miles long also joining 2 other waterfowl duck habitats with thousands of acres of public access. We will hunt an area 1 time then move out allowing time for ducks to return. This will give us the opportunity to come back 2 weeks later and to hunt again. We believe rotating duck hunting locations help us bag more birds. Our day was simple when it comes to duck hunting! We met at Goldin Acres to take a short drive over to a public pond where we plan to set up. We will use volunteer tree branches from back at the ranch to help make our blind. It makes for easy cover if you keep the branches less than 1" in diameter to shove into the ground creating the frame to fill in with whatever we can find. This was a duck hunt to remember.
