Francisco Franco Bahamonde ruled Spain as dictator from 1939–1975 following the Nationalist victory in the Spanish Civil War. The international press and academia have made no secret of their contempt towards the man as was made clear by their applauding of the desecration of his corpse in 2019 by orders of Socialist Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez. Consistent treatment is never given with the Communists whom Franco was fighting against. The first Prime Minister of the Second Spanish Republic was Manuel Azana, an atheist who immediately began trying to eradicate Christianity from Spain following the example of Mexico and Russia. In a matter of mere months the Spanish Republic had more people put to death than the allegedly harsh Spanish Inquisition had done in all the centuries it had operated. And, whereas Franco refused to surrender Spanish independence in foreign policy or any other area in return for assistance (he refused to join the Axis powers in WWII despite being his former benefactors), the republican government completely sold out Spain and the Spanish people – signing away no less than two-thirds of the entire Spanish gold reserve to the Soviet Union in exchange for their support in the war. Anyone inclined to sympathise with the republicans should note that there would have been no Franco without the republic. It was their overthrow of the monarchy, their divisive policies and outright oppression that made it possible for a man like Franco to dominate Spain and, to the eyes of many, made a man like Franco necessary.
