Why are there 7 and not 4 or 15? Because a mech has three primary stats or characteristics... Weapons, Armor, and Movement Tonnage goes into these characteristics, with some variation in weapons, but mostly a mech is either balanced (jack of all trades, not really good for anything) or heavily tilted in one or two of these characteristics. That makes for 7 combinations. However, the actual tabletop play makes the 7 combinations not quite these mathematical conceptual combinations, but still somewhat close: All armor, or armor and weapons, or armor and speed - Brawler Armor and speed or weapons and speed - Bodyguard All weapons - Ranged support (because no armor means this can only work with ranged) All speed - Spotter All speed and weapons - Hunter or bodyguard Weapons with some armor - Space Control Balanced mechs tend to be hunters or bodyguards or other - specialized niche like anti infantry or anti air because of weapon choices Here we discuss what kinds of mechs qualify for those designations and how to pair them into lances or battle groups and use them on the tabletop. In a later video see the DPS category video I list mechs as categorized by computer analysis of battle value.
