#storytelling #rockandroll #tednugent #bear #hunting In 2003, there was much debate in New Jersey if there should be a bear hunt or not. Ted Nugent's United Sportsman of America supported the hunt with common sense arguments. I protested the northern NJ director, Eric Bunk in 2003, of the Ted Nugent United Sportman Association in support of the bear hunt and wrote many letters to the editor as well. In 2003, it was estimated there were 3200 black bears in New Jersey. Just 30 years earlier, there were only 50 bears in the state. Thanks to money from hunting licences, game land were purchased, seasons were set, game wardens are hired to enforce the law and advocate for safety and thanks to hunters, the black bear population in New Jersey has flourished. Interesting in the states of Pennsylvania and New York, having a bear hunt has never been an issue. I have eaten bear stew, and the meat was tender and tasted sweet. Why is this a controversial issue? Like any controversial issue, there are good arguments on each side. My question for the NJ Bear Group is, "Is being a vegetarian a prerequistie to join?" If a group is an anti-hunting group, then I would guess their membership do not eat meat - chicken, beef, pork, et al.... I look at the major cities in India having a problem with menacing monkeys. The monkeys are considered "sacred", so the authorities will not kill them. They try to sterilize the monkeys, but in the meantime, packs of monkeys attack, menace, threaten and steal food and backpacks from tourists and Indian people. They have no fear of humans. As Mao Zedong said, "Power comes from the end of a gun." Uncivil, menacing and criminal behavior is encourage when there is no consequences. We should listen to the state scientists if a hunt is needed or not. I provides safety for humans from nusance bears and helps maintain a healthy bear population in New Jersey. I once had a bear that kept getting close to my home and just looked at me when I banged the pans together. One shot from the b b gun to his butt, and he ran off into the woods. The next time he saw me, he turned away back to the woods as a healthy bear should do. In the thumbnail picture is famous archery hunter and advocate Fred Bear with Ted Nugent.
