Urban redesign and large-scale ecosystem restoration in L.A. can prevent future fires. Los Angeles is just beginning the long recovery process from last month's devastating fires. Sadly, simply rebuilding will only leave L.A. more vulnerable. Why? Because the current pattern of settlement has dried the whole region. To really end the fire risk, L.A. must regrow its ecosystems, both wild and urban. This involves rehydrating the region with massive earthworks, layered plantings and perhaps some animal species introductions.
