Billy Eckstine’s band was blessed and cursed at the same time. When so many musicians, Eckstine included, were performing with the Earl Hines orchestra, late night jam sessions gave birth to a lot of new modern musical ideas. Eckstine started his own band, using these ideas. This included a veritable Who’s Who of the music – Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Dexter Gordon, Gene Ammons, Art Blakey and Miles Davis. But as Eckstine once said, “It wasn’t commercial. Wrong time. Too new”. It did not help that there was a recording ban, because there was not an approved contract with the Musicians Union. It was a curse that it was not really commercially recorded. But the band was blessed because they did make a film called “Rhythm in a Riff” and they did appear on the radio show “Jubilee”. These vital documents give a quite vital document about how these musical ideas were realized. The performances here were culled from a group of performances captured early in 1945. Even though the music was considered challenging for many, Eckstine did have a very fine show business sense. He blended the many virtues of his band in a very entertaining way. While he sings many of the songs heard here, he also employed the tremendous vocalist Sarah Vaughan, who had one of the greatest jazz singing careers post WW II. When you hear solos on these performances, it is frequently such stellar musicians as Fats Navarro, Gene Ammons or Budd Johnson – all excellent musicians. Even though this band did not last, Eckstine did have huge success soon thereafter. He even had some million selling records for MGM. Co-producer/Director BOP!
