문정부, "고르게 잘사는 균형있는 대한민국" 이룰것 Over the course of this week, we've been examining the Moon administration's recently-revealed policy blueprint. Today we zoom in on the government's goal of achieving balanced regional development. Here's our Lee Un-shin with the fifth and final installment of this series. Some 2 months since taking office, President Moon Jae-in laid out the policy blueprints his administration will be focusing over the next 5 years. Along with the agendas surrounding foreign policy, North Korea, the economy, and welfare... the new government is also putting a big emphasis on achieving balanced regional development. "It's a critical time upon us. 84 of 230 cities, counties and districts of Korea may disappear within about 30 years." 30 230 84 . As such, the government laid out its vision for regional development outside the capital, and vowed to work closely to further promote local autonomy by giving more power to regional administrations. One part of this plan involves making the city of Sejong, some 120 kilometers south of Seoul, the nation's administrative hub. The government will soon relocate two major ministries to Sejong; The Ministry of the Interior, currently based in Seoul, and the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning which is just outside the capital. In the coming years, the government hopes Sejong will also attract more private firms and international organizations. In line with the plans to decentralize state power....the President pledged to prepare the constitutional grounds for a secondary Cabinet meeting, one made up of key members of regional governments. The President made it clear more regular meetings between central and local governments on core issues can be expected. For fairer growth and encouraging regional economy outside the capital..., the government also plans to invest in rural area development through building more schools and better using local resources to create more jobs.
