They say your first night in prison is the hardest… But for Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, this past weekend behind bars was not his first experience with a jail cell. The son of late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe appeared in court on Monday, 23 February 2026, after reportedly collapsing twice at the Bramley Police holding cells and requiring medical attention. Bellarmine is now facing an attempted murder charge after an alleged shooting incident in Hyde Park. According to police, the weapon used in the alleged crime has still not been recovered — leading to an additional charge being added to the case. He appeared briefly at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court after a delay caused by a police vehicle mistakenly transporting him to the Randburg Magistrate’s Court. Bellarmine Mugabe appeared alongside his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze, who is reportedly his relative. But this is not the first time Bellarmine has faced serious charges. In 2025, he was arrested in Zimbabwe following a violent confrontation at the Ultimate Mining Concession in Mazowe — a gold mining site bordering property owned by former First Lady Grace Mugabe. The incident, which allegedly left a mine security guard critically injured, resulted in Bellarmine and his bodyguards being charged with multiple counts of assault. They were later granted bail of US$200 by the Concession Magistrates’ Court — and that matter remains unresolved.
