White House, pull out to see large security gate STORYLINE: The annual spring meeting of the IMF (International Monetary Fund) and World Bank in Washington this weekend has been given new importance due to the turmoil in Iraq. Topping the agenda: raising billions of dollars to rebuild Iraq and devising ways to stimulate global growth. Now that U.S. forces have extended control over Baghdad and helped secure Iraq's northern oilfields, the Bush administration is seeking to show Iraqis that the end of President Saddam Hussein's rule will bring substantial economic benefit. Treasury Secretary John Snow said he would use the weekend meetings of the 184-nation IMF and World Bank to start pulling together the resources to rebuild Iraq. The lending organisations said they were prepared to send fact-finding missions to Iraq once it was safe to do so but wanted the United Nations to have a central role. Preliminary estimates on the cost of rebuilding Iraq range from $20 billion a year for the first few years to as much as $600 billion over a decade. Representatives from developing countries ranging from economic powerhouse Brazil to poverty-ridden African nations such as the Congo and Ethiopia met as the Group of 24 Friday at the headquarters of the International Monetary Fund on Friday. At a press conference following their day long meeting, the Group of 24's chair reiterated the importance of the United Nations role in humanitarian reconstruction in Iraq. And he said aid from the IMF and the World Bank would follow. Security was extra tight in Washington on Friday in preparation for the weekend's meetings. The annual IMF-World Bank meetings are expected to attract demonstrators for such causes as debt relief for poor nations and reform of the world economy, but the protests are expected to be much smaller than in the past.
