Did A.R. Rahman lose work because of communal politics? Or is this simply the natural evolution of music and audience taste? In this video, I respond respectfully to A.R. Rahman’s recent comments where he suggested that his work opportunities reduced due to communal and political reasons, and where he criticized films like Chhava (based on Sambhaji Maharaj) for being politically motivated and divisive. The controversy further intensified after reactions from public figures like Kangana Ranaut and Javed Akhtar, turning this into a larger cultural and political debate about art, cinema, and ideology in India. With complete respect to A.R. Rahman’s legendary contribution to Indian music, I present a different perspective. Indian music history has always shown that even the greatest artists face shifts in relevance due to changing audience taste: Lata Mangeshkar did not continue singing for heroines after the 1990s. Kumar Sanu and Udit Narayan, once dominant voices of the 90s, gradually lost mainstream space. Many legendary singers and composers experienced similar transitions. This is not erasure — it is evolution. In this video, I argue that A.R. Rahman’s reduced mainstream presence is more connected to changing musical aesthetics, industry trends, and audience preferences than to political or communal targeting. I also discuss how modern India is increasingly politicizing art, cinema, and culture — and how constant framing of artistic criticism through political lenses only deepens unnecessary divisions. This video is not an attack. It is a respectful disagreement. A conversation, not a cancellation. If you care about Indian music, cinema, and cultural discourse beyond outrage politics, this video is for you. 🎥 Watch more thoughtful cinema and culture analysis on my channel: 👉 / @debojyoti_dey ⚠️ Disclaimer: This video expresses personal analytical and cultural commentary.
