After a long hiatus due to a herniated disc, Wayne Gretzky returned to the Los Angeles Kings lineup. This game would mark his second back in the lineup after making his 1992-93 season debut just a few days earlier on January 6, 1993 at the Great Western Forum versus the Tampa Bay Lightning - a game which the Kings lost by a score of 6-3. The Jets had two newcomers to the team - Tie Domi and Kris King who were acquired from the New York Rangers in exchange for Ed Olczyk on December 28, 1992.
