Saudi Arabia's next generation of energy leaders will train in a building that practices what it teaches. The KAPSARC School of Public Policy, opening in 2027 on the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center campus in Riyadh, is a 212,600-sq.-ft. net-zero graduate school that draws on centuries of desert building wisdom rather than fighting the climate. Three rectangular wings levitate above the wadi—a seasonal watercourse that blooms into the campus garden—creating shaded outdoor rooms where teaching, dining and gathering can spill outside during Riyadh's cooler months. Solar canopies over the parking area generate 130% of the building's energy needs. A perforated second skin limits heat gain while maintaining views and avoiding the sand collection and bird nesting that plague horizontal sunshades in the desert. The building also bridges a gap on campus, connecting the residential community to the research district with a ground-level community hub including a cafeteria, fitness center and daycare.
