Over the last 30 years, 'disability' has been redefined, thanks to the efforts of people like Michael Oliver, Colin Barnes, Harlan Hahn and now Elizabeth Barnes. In this Discourse, discover how people understood disability in different places and times, how we should understand disability now, and how can we respond to the need to promote inclusion and equality. Tom will offer a way of understanding impairment which takes into account environmental barriers, as well as the impact of bodies and minds that may function differently. How then should we respond to the challenge of disability? Tom Shakespeare is professor of disability research at London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. He is author of more than 100 papers and twelve books, and has worked for the World Health Organisation. He broadcasts regularly on BBC Radio 3 and 4. -- Discourses are one of the Ri’s oldest series of talks. They follow a format established in 1826 by Michael Faraday, where the best and brightest share their work with the world.
