EAST LINDSEY PARISH #8: HANNAH CUM HAGNABY Welcome for the first time, to the Alford area of East Lindsey. This is Hannah cum Hagnaby, a parish containing two settlements that sits between Alford and the coastal resort of Mablethorpe, just five miles away. A tiny parish, Hannah cum Hagnaby has an equally tiny population, most of whom live in Hannah, residing within a small cluster of houses off the A1111. Hannah used to be called Hannay, anciently, and is known to have been settled as far back as the Bronze Age. This fact is backed up by the existence of a round barrow here. If we’re talking earthworks though, look no further than Hannah’s counterpart - Hagnaby, an even smaller settlement out to the West which contains the impressive remains of the once mighty Hagnaby Abbey. Fragments of the abbey, a Premonstratensian priory founded in 1175, still exist at Hagnaby Abbey Farm nearby. Aside from the abbey’s remains, landmarks here are a bit thin on the ground, but Hannah does possess the Grade I listed church of St Andrew, which was built in the 1750s. The whole area lies within an area of former marshland, which is now rich farmland, worked by the many farms scattered throughout this far flung portion of Eastern Lincolnshire. Now, given this place’s name, it goes without saying that this episode couldn’t have been complete without one certain member of our team. Yep, Hannah came with us, to Hannah.
