Good evening. Andy Creel, District 4 resident and parent, and I'm modifying these results—or these comments—on the fly without the benefit of a drama education. So, please bear with me. And—and I too am here tonight to ask the committee to reject this budget as proposed. Much too often, programs like these outside of the so-called core curricula are the first targeted when districts seek to reduce spending. But as you've heard numerous times tonight, they are vital to students. And I say that as a former math teacher, so I'm not dismissing the importance of those traditional academic subjects, but I'm just saying that these are every bit as important and irreplaceable. I taught math at an arts magnet high school, and it just so happens that I started working at that school as its district was facing declining enrollment. In fact, in my second year, it was not just our arts programs that were on the chopping block, but our entire school. Parents, teachers, and staff made impassioned pleas to the district, of course. But without—without a doubt, the students’ response to our proposed closure is what saved the school. They organized themselves, crafting signs, constructing messaging, and planning a pair of walkouts where an overwhelming majority of the student body marched from their classrooms to the doors of the district office. Their determination did not wane with time or when our prospects looked the most grim. Instead, they packed meeting after meeting to be heard and seen until, at last, the district relented from its plan and our school remained open. They found more money. It can happen. Despite my best efforts, no trigonometry was used in this effort. Many of the challenges we face in life cannot be overcome alone, and people are not led with calculus but with courage, confidence, and compassion. Please do not restrict our children's opportunities to build these qualities.
