The beautiful Blue Lakes Trail is in the Mount Sneffels Wilderness area of Colorado, surrounded by Ridgeway, Ouray, and Telluride Colorado in the San Juan Mountains. This is one of the most beautiful trails we have had the joy to see - and it is certainly an adventure. The trail is at the end of a very long and rough County Road 7, off Highway 62, between Ridgeway and the Telluride area. The first 1.5 miles is very steep, and I had my first-ever problem with the altitude during that section. But, it cleared up fairly quickly, and I had no additional issues. The highlight of day was the overlook above Lower Blue Lake, and we were forced to turn back before proceeding further due to the thunderstorms. Dax (our son) and I had hoped to summit Mount Sneffels via the ridge rather than taking the trailat the pass (because of difficult scree) but were forced to save that for a later trip. This trail includes solitude, beautiful flowing streams and mountain runoff, lots of flowers and beautiful vegetation and of course the uniquely blue lakes! The entire trail (not including Mount Sneffels) is approximately 12 miles to the Mt. Sneffels Pass out and back and takes an average of about 6 hours to complete, with approximately 3600 foot of elevation gain. We hiked approximately 8 miles, but that included a lot of wandering around the lower blue lake area. Dogs are obviously allowed, and there is a hut that can be reserved. Go to https://sanjuanhuts.com/hike/blue-lak... for more information on the hut.
