How did Mascarenhas de Morais die? Mascarenhas de Morais was a central figure in Brazil's military history, especially during complex situations that involved not only the army, but also Brazilian politics in general. Much of his time in the army was spent working in the federal capital, which made his decisions even more difficult. One of the complex situations in which he had to act, as soon as he was in a command position, was in 1922, when Mascarenhas was a captain and commanded the 1st Mounted Artillery Regiment. At this time, the Revolt of the 18 of the Fort broke out, and Mascarenhas sided with the legalists, ordering the arrest of many rebels. In the following decade, during the acts that culminated in the Revolution of 1930, a movement led by Getúlio Vargas and his allies sought to overthrow the government of Washington Luís and put an end to the Old Republic. Mascarenhas de Morais continued to oppose behaviors that went against current legislation, and over the months, this ended up having consequences for his life. At this time, Mascarenhas de Morais was a lieutenant colonel, commanding the 6th Mounted Artillery Regiment, and responsible for the 3rd Brigade in Cruz Alta. As he had always followed a legalist line, it was no different during the 1930 Revolution, and Mascarenhas maintained his loyalty to President Washington Luís, which ended up leading to his arrest on October 4th by rebels led by Getúlio Vargas, where he remained in prison for 38 days. Even with Getúlio assuming the presidency, Mascarenhas de Morais continued to assert himself against the government that he understood to be illegal, and in 1932, when the Constitutionalist Revolution broke out, Mascarenhas participated as a cryptographic key for communications with the constitutionalists, for a possible conspiracy of the uprising in Paraná. At that time, he commanded the 9th Mounted Artillery Regiment of Curitiba, and his support for the rebels was of great importance. However, his possible participation eventually reached the ears of his superiors, who were in favor of Getúlio, which led to his being arrested again, and only released after the end of the uprising. In the years that followed, Mascarenhas became increasingly important in the armed forces and gained prestige, especially within the academic sector of the institution. In 1934, he commanded the Officers' Improvement School in Rio de Janeiro, and the following year he commanded the Realengo Military School, where he remained until 1937. In 1939, with the beginning of the Second World War, Mascarenhas had already reached the rank of brigadier general, and had a history of command in several military regions of Brazil. Very attentive to events in Europe, the military man managed to be transferred to command the 7th Military Region and reflect on his life. Mascarenhas maintained a simple routine, surrounded by his family. Despite his advanced age, he continued to follow political developments and in Rio de Janeiro, civil and military authorities, family, friends and admirers came to pay their last respects to the marshal. He was buried in the São Francisco Xavier Cemetery, located in Rio de Janeiro. Marshal Mascarenhas de Morais left a lasting example of leadership, humanity and dedication to the country, consolidating himself as one of the most respected figures in the military history of Brazil.
