The Magnificent Wat Suthat | Temple Tour Of Bangkok | S02E10P04

Lᴜᴋᴇ Wᴀʟᴋs - Wat Suthat Thepwararam is a royal temple of the first grade, one of ten such temples in Bangkok (23 in Thailand). Construction was begun by King Rama I in 1807. Further construction and decorations were carried out by King Rama II who helped carve the wooden doors who was a talented poet and artist, but the temple was not completed until the reign of King Rama III in 1847. At the lower terrace of the base, there are 28 Chinese pagodas which symbolize the 28 Buddhas born on this earth. Inside the temple’s main prayer hall are walls with details of the 24 incarnations of Buddha. 800 Year old Sukhothai image - Wat Suthat contains the Buddha image Phra Sri Sakyamuni which was cast in bronze in 1361 and had been initially installed at Wat Mahathat in Sukhothai, where is was left for for centuries exposed to the elements when the city fell into ruin. In 1808 King Rama a had it floated down the Chao Phraya river for installation. When it arrived to the city it was too big for the landing pier so an section of the city wall had to be smashed down so they could bring the image in. King Rama I himself helped haul the image through the wall and then walked barefoot int eh procession that brought the image to the temple. It was clear to onlookers that he was unwell and by the time he reached the temple he was exhausted and staggering. He still however help hoist the image into place and after the image was in its place he whispered to his assistants that his work was done. Within a few of this even he was dead.
