Title: Journey of Dead Artist: SHO Circle: Sonic Hybrid Orchestra Album: Touhou Tempest V Original: 死体旅行　～ Be of good cheer! (Corpse Voyage ~ Be of good cheer!) Sometimes life follows the line of mathematics and there can be a couple of good analogies to describe what we live everyday with this wonderful paradise. I think wether you are passionate or not to this studies, you probably know that multiplying a minus by another minus equals positive. Well think of one minus like SHO and another minus "Be a good cheer!" multiply each other to equal something very positive and epic. If you have followed me since long ago, you know I'm not fond to "Synth Metal" (a term used to describe heavy metal songs created using only keyboards and synthethisers instead of real guitars and other instruments). Creating an arrange (or what can be called a true arrange) is never easy, but if you use real instruments you are adding a human touch that no machine can reproduce. Demetori's guitarist Tokunan, one of the things that make him a freaking god is his insane way of playing guitar and bending those notes to the point of melting your heart. CROW'SCLAW's Taka will chill your spine with every pinch harmonic he uses. All of this are bare examples of why I prefer the natural composition rather than listening with synths. SHO (or "Sonic Hybrid Orchestra") has always been a favorite among Touhou Heavy Metal fans. This is no surprise, since ad their name implies, they always throw beautiful orchestra sounds to the equations, pretty much declaring their roots on speed, power and symphonic metal. However since ancient times, they have always used synths to achieve their music, and I have never heard them doing it the other way around. Perhaps its their own pride of doing their own stuff, however with so many talented guitarist in japan, I just don't see the problem of asking someone to do the job. Sonic Highspeed Orchestra is always requested by many of you, to what I always deny saying I don't have any interest in synth metal. "Be a Good Cheer!" has always striked me as a strange song to include in such a dramatic scenery. There you are, on the depths of earth on your way to the volcanic inferno, trough the scorching fire in a desolate, nostalgic melody such as "Lullaby of Deserted Hell", when all of the sudden this breaks into a cheerful and enrgetic song such as "Be a Good Cheer!". If you are inexperienced in Touhou games, your ass will be handed out to Orin since I found her pretty hard to beat, and always getting beaten with that cheerful song sure is something interesting. Now I'm not saying it's bad, perhaps its the adequate rest you need before the ultra-mega-incredibly-ultimate epic the last stage is. As I said before, the scenery of a character "fallen angel" like who has absorbed the God of the Sun, and has the power to manipulate nuclear energy pretty much sold out the entire game. But perhaps you need that break of "Be a Good Cheer!" in order to raise the excitement when you start listening "Hellfire Mantle". After the cheer is over, the freaking Apocalypse has begun. We finally arrive to the point where we have to tie in this 2 paragraphs, by saying that SHO with all their synth madness have achieved to made something beyond a "cheerful" theme song, turning it into a glorious song that suits very well the one who actually lured you to go trough all the underground in the first place. Well, perhaps that IS the reason of why Orin theme is so cheerful. After all, all she wants is to help Utsuho from her corruption. The synth metal here work I believe, because volumes are very well cared. The bass, and drums are loud enough so you can actually listen the rhythm guitar without actually bothering you its a synth guitar, and the orchestra is so well done, that your attention is focused on this, and not in the lead guitar.
