The Dead Leaf Praying Mantis ( Deroplatys ) is an insect species that lives in the rainforests of Asia. As the name suggests, they look just like dead leaves! In evolutionary terms, they are expert leaf mimics. They do this to be successful as ambush predators - they can wait for unsuspecting prey. As a predator, the dead leaf mantis differs to the stick insects that are also fantastic mimics, in that they are camouflaged on order to mainly avoid predation, as they are vegetarians unlike mantises.
