What is a UTI?! AKA: Urinary Tract Infection An infection in any part of the urinary system, the kidneys, bladder, or urethra. Urinary tract infections are more common in women. They usually occur in the bladder or urethra, but more serious infections involve the kidney. A bladder infection may cause pelvic pain, increased urge to urinate, pain with urination, and blood in the urine. A kidney infection may cause back pain, nausea, vomiting, and fever. Common treatment is with antibiotics. A urinary tract infection, or UTI, is an infection of the urinary tract. The infection can occur at different points in the urinary tract, including: Bladder -- An infection in the bladder is also called cystitis or a bladder infection. Kidneys -- An infection of one or both kidneys is called pyelonephritis or a kidney infection. Ureters -- The tubes that take urine from each kidney to the bladder are rarely the only site of infection.
