In this lecture, David deSilva explains how honor and shame shaped everyday life in the world of the New Testament—and why modern readers often miss what the biblical authors assumed everyone already knew. In the ancient Mediterranean world, honor and shame were not internal feelings but public realities, communicated through visible actions: where someone was seated, how their body or head was treated, and even the way their name or reputation was spoken. Social standing was constantly being affirmed—or challenged—in community settings. Dr. deSilva also explores how honor functioned differently for men and women, with female honor closely tied to modesty, household structure, and carefully regulated public presence within a patriarchal society. These dynamics were deeply embedded in family life and social expectations. Unlike modern Western individualism, ancient honor–shame cultures placed group loyalty above personal self-interest. Identity, worth, and behavior were evaluated through the lens of family, household, and community—not individual autonomy. Understanding this cultural framework is essential for interpreting Jesus’ teachings, the actions of the early church, and many passages that otherwise feel confusing or offensive to modern readers.
