A beautiful transformation only on nine tonight. A Uganda woman who was burned with battery acid is given a new look. A West Hills burn foundation and volunteers helped raise the money for her surgery. KCAL’s 9’s Rachel Kim shares her story with us. We first met a timid and withdrawn Christina Cocteau back in April. The twenty two year old Ugandan woman was left disfigured after she was doused with battery acid by her partner's jealous ex-girlfriend. We spoke with her through a translator as she was about to undergo major reconstructive surgery. The biggest hope she had when she went for the first process, she believe that she's going to be better than how she was before. An American volunteer in Uganda. and the Grossman Burn Foundation in West Hills raised money and made it possible for Christine to come to the U.S. and get the surgeries she needed. For me the toughest point was finding that balance of cosmetic and function. You can see the beauty not just within but now on the outside as well. This is Christine today. Transformed on the outside and a new sense of confidence inside. Dr Peter Grossman was the lead surgeon in Christine's reconstructive process. His team performed a total of six surgeries on her face, breast, and arms. She also got it a prosthetic eye and extensive facial tattooing. I contour actually everything, like I did to her eyebrows. The most important is to see somebody coming in and then at the end to give such a beautiful smile. The time constraints and her health issues, we did the best that we could under the circumstances, and I'm very pleased for her. I want to say I’m thankful. With a new look and hope for the future, Christine is heading home to Uganda. Her faith has helped her let go of the anger and focus on fighting for victims like her. But the most important thing she returns to will be her daughter Tiana. She’s going to tell her that she loves her so much. I love everyone. I love everyone.
