This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Watch Sarah and Rich take us through their thoughts on what it means to be unbound, and how it can change your perspective on the potential around you. After graduating from college, UnBoundRVA co-founders Sarah Mullens and Richard Luck joined Teach for America. While teaching in the inner city of Charlotte, NC, they saw an incredible amount of talent going underutilized. So they set out on a mission to develop a process that would help build successful entrepreneurs, using the talents they already possessed. After months of researching, studying, and combining entrepreneurial programs and micro financing models from around the world, they developed a unique model for their non-profit organization that supports low-income individuals in starting their own businesses. This model is a revolutionary innovation for RVA, and they believe it can work elsewhere as an interesting solution to urban poverty. Sarah comes from a long line of educators, and has had a lifelong passion for learning and service. In high school, she co-founded and led Library for the Homeless, an organization that delivered books to Austin, TX’s homeless population. She then attended Hampshire College in Amherst, MA, where she concentrated in Mathematics and Philosophy, with a minor in Formal Logic. Richard grew up in a family business, Luck Companies, and has seen first hand what it takes to run a company. He attended the Virginia Military Institute where he majored in Business and Economics. He also minored in Leadership and had a concentration in Financial Management. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
