We are departing from tropical Port Douglas, just an hour's drive north of Cairns, Australia. The hike begins at the historic St Mary’s by the Sea chapel. We'll wander through Rex Smeal Park, a popular spot for sunset watching and climb up the stairs to the summit of Flagstaff Hill (74m / 243 feet). The summit of Flagstaff Hill is only one of the many lookouts along the way, with breath-taking views of the Daintree National Park, palm-fringed Four Mile Beach and the Great Barrier Reef. After leaving the summit of Flagstaff hill, our journey continues down to Four Mile Beach, followed by a stroll back to Rex Smeal Park via the vibrant Macrossan Street. ⚠ Pro Tip 1: If you visit Port Douglas on a Sunday, don't miss the lively Port Douglas Markets near St Mary’s by the Sea chapel. (I chose a quieter day to enjoy the walking track with fewer crowds. But next time I’ll go on a Sunday). ⚠ Pro Tip 2: During the summer months (approx. December – April) going early in the morning is recommended. It can be very hot on the trail already at 9am! And don’t forget to bring a water bottle – there are refill stations along the way.
