A Long Island college student is recovering after undergoing a groundbreaking limb-sparing surgery that saved her leg and her life following a diagnosis of osteosarcoma, a rare and aggressive bone cancer. Kelly Mullooly, a University of New Haven student-athlete, initially mistook her persistent knee pain for a sports injury. But after further testing at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, doctors discovered a malignant tumor in her leg. Within days, she began chemotherapy and underwent a complex procedure to remove the cancerous bone and replace it with a metal prosthetic knee. The surgery, known as limb-sparing surgery, allowed doctors to avoid amputation while effectively treating the cancer. Mullooly also underwent fertility preservation before treatment began, and she’s now completing chemotherapy with hopes of returning to college and her cheer team next year.
