What does AJCC stand for? AJCC stands for the American Joint Committee on Cancer. AJCC publishes guides for classification and staging of cancer, which are used by practically all medical professionals in this county to anatomically stage cancer patients, and this staging is critical to assess patients’ prognosis and determine how their cancer should be treated. AJCC is comprised of 22 member organizations, and they are listed in the description box below, and individuals who belong to these member organizations can join AJCC membership and serve on various committees within AJCC and work with other medical professionals, oncologists, surgeons, pathologists, and radiologists, to produce validated systems and resources, such as the AJCC Cancer Staging System, for the classification and management of cancer. The AJCC staging system is a system to describe the amount and spread of cancer in a patient’s body, using TNM. T describes the size of the tumor and any spread of cancer into nearby tissue; N describes spread of cancer to nearby lymph nodes; and M describes metastasis (which is the spread of cancer to other parts of the body). Again, this system was created and is updated by AJCC and UICC, which stands for the Union for International Cancer Control. The AJCC staging system is used to describe most types of cancer, and it is also known as the TNM staging system.
