Who was Mad Jack Churchill?

John Malcolm Thorpe Fleming Churchill was a British Army officer who fought in World War II. Nicknamed "Fighting Jack Churchill" and "Mad Jack" his exploits are the stuff of adventure movies. Born to a family who worked in the British civil service, Churchill grew up seeing many parts of the Empire. He was educated at King William's College and graduated from Sandhurst in 1926. His first post in the army was in Burma with the Manchester Regiment. In his spare time, he rode motorcycles long distance, taught himself the Bagpipes and how to shoot a longbow. In fact, he was so good at both that he performed well in international competitions. He would later carry his pipes, a bow and a Claymore into battle. In 1940 - Jack led small teams in guerrilla raids behind German lines during the CBC EV Dunkirk evacuation. He used a sword in close combat but preferred sniping Germans from 100 yards using his longbow. He also took to riding a captured motorcycle around the countryside coordinating attacks. And once even “rode into battle” on the bike firing off arrows as he went. In 1941 - Jack led a Commando raid on the German garrison at Vågsøy, Norway. As his landing craft came ashore, he played "March of the Cameron Men" on the pipes to inspire his men… As he hit the beach he dropped the pipes and charged in throwing grenades. His outfit succeeded with flying colors. For his actions at Dunkirk and Vågsøy, Churchill received the Military Cross and Bar. In July 1943, Jack commanded #2 Commando unit from their landing site at Catania in Sicily. As usual, he had his trademark broadsword slung around his waist, a longbow and arrows around his neck and his bagpipes under his arm. At Salerno, Jack’s team (without orders) launched a night raid capturing 136 prisoners. However, in the march home, he and one corporal got separated from their unit. Churchill just decided to keep going on the offensive. He and his mate infiltrated more German positions around Molina. With just his sword, Churchill personally took 42 more prisoners. He later remarked that it worked because Germans would take orders from anyone who showed they meant business and shouted loudly enough. In 1944 - Jack again led the Commandos. This time with 1,500 Yugoslavian partisans in a raid on the island of Brač. After two days rough fighting, almost all of the commandos were killed or wounded. Churchill himself became trapped with only a pistol and a few rounds lieft. Assuming he was done for, he relaxed and started playing "Will Ye No Come Back Again?" on his pipes. He was knocked unconscious by grenades and captured. Now, the Germans who took him thought he was related to Winston Churchill so they flew him to Berlin for interrogation. He was later moved to Sachsenhausen concentration camp. In September 1944 he and some mates escaped through a hand-dug tunnel. Sadly, Jack was recaptured on the Baltic coast. He was sent to another camp in southern Tyrol. The war was coming to a close, and SS guards of the camp were preparing to execute all the prisoners. Luckily, some German regular army men chose to protect the prisoners and forced the SS out. Effectively freeing the camp inmates. On his one, Churchill walked 93 miles through Italy until he met an American armored unit. When the war ended, Jack was actually really disappointed. He remained in the army though and by 1948 was serving as an executive officer with the Seaforth Highlanders in British Palestine. Motto: "Any officer who goes into action without his sword is improperly dressed." -------------------------------------------------- WE HAVE A PASSION FOR HERITAGE Located in Spring City PA, USA Kilts is a team of American kilt makers who have been making men’s kilts in authentic clan tartans since 2003.
