Diesel - Down In The Silvermine - Ren Je Rot 1980

February 25 1980: Dutch rock band Diesel performs "Down In The Silvermine" on Holland's popular kiddy show "Ren Je Rot", presented by Martin Brozius. Written by Mark Boon and Rob Vunderink, "Down In The Silvermine", was the second single to be pulled from Diesel's 1980 debut album "Watts In A Tank" and, like Diesel's first single "Goin' Back To China", peaked at number 28 in the Dutch Top 40. Diesel's fourth single, "Sausalito Summernight", also penned by Boon and Vunderink, just barely made it into the Dutch charts, but fared better across the Atlantic, peaking at number 25 in the Billboard Hot 100 and reaching the number one spot in Canada, prompting a North American Tour in the fall of 1981. Over the years, Diesel underwent countless changes of personnel, but the band in this clip - smiling their way through a stunning example of Dutch choreography - was the real deal and consisted of Mark Boon (lead vocal, lead guitar), Rob Vunderink (lead vocal, lead guitar), Pim Koopman (drums, background vocal, producer) and Frank Papendrecht (bass guitar, background vocal). Sadly and ironically, three of the guys featured in this video have since descended into the silvermine for good. Martin Brozius, Frank Papendrecht and Pim Koopman all passed away in 2009, Frank and Pim within one week of each other.
