In January 2025, 20-year-old Zymir Humphrey was sentenced to 15 years to life in state prison for the May 2022 murder of 21-year-old Brandon Atkinson on Manhattan's Lower East Side. Humphrey, a member of the "Up the Hill" gang, believed that a rival group, "Down the Hill," was responsible for a robbery targeting an associate. Although Atkinson was affiliated with "Down the Hill," he was not involved in the robbery. Humphrey located Atkinson near East 3rd Street and Avenue D and fatally shot him in the back of the head. This act escalated tensions between the two gangs, leading to further violence. Humphrey was apprehended in West Virginia in July 2022 and later extradited to New York City.
