1979 East German Military "Wachaufzug" Ceremony

Rare footage of the October 7, 1979 "Großer Wachaufzug" ceremony, held on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the GDR. The "Wachaufzug" was a guard changing ritual held every Wednesday at 2:30 pm in front of the Neue Wache, a neo-classical building designed by famous architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel. The first guard changing ceremony was held on September 18, 1818, during an official visit by Tsar Alexander I of Russia when he arrived in Berlin. The guard changing ceremony has roots in Russian military tradition and was adopted by the Prussian Army specifically for this event. The guard changing ceremony played a critical role in German military tradition and it had miraculously survived multiple regimes up, from the German Empire to the Weimar Republic, Nazi Germany, and finally the German Democratic Republic. The last guard changing ceremony in German history took place on October 3, 1990 during the reunification of East and West Germany. The tradition has since been abandoned by the modern day German government for ideological reasons, however the mounting of the guard still exists in a limited form, albeit very rarely due to it being restricted for state visits only. Couple with the fact that the mounting of the guard lasts approximately less than 10 minutes under a heavy security presence during wreath laying ceremonies by world leaders, the ritual is very rarely seen by the public.
