Aaron Lington, Baritone Sax, makes a special featured guest appearance on the Pepper Adams Jazz Channel. http://www.aaronlington.com/ Aaron Joseph Lington is the author of: "THE IMPROVISATIONAL VOCABULARY OF PEPPER ADAMS: A COMPARISON OF THE RELATIONSHIP OF SELECTED MOTIVES TO HARMONY IN FOUR IMPROVISED SOLOS" (Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS, August 2005) "Pepper Aarons" is one of his big band charts: "This is a medium-up swing tune featuring improvised solos for baritone saxophone and trumpet. Composed by trumpeter Paul Tynan and arranged by Aaron Lington. "Pepper Aarons" attempts to fuse the melodic style of Pepper Adams within a modern harmonic framework. A catchy melody underscored by a deceptive chord progression is played by baritone saxophone, trumpet, and guitar. The head is followed by a saxophone soli and a trombone soli which leads into solo space for baritone saxophone and trumpet. After the soloists, the ensemble plays an exciting shout section followed by a brief recap of the melody. This composition was one of the winning compositions in the 2007 San Jose Jazz Society's Composer Competition. Aaron Lington was commissioned by the San Jose Jazz Society to write this arrangement." Aaron Lington seems equally (if not more) inspired by that other titan of the bari sax, Nick Brignola. Aaron Lington's "Cape Breton" fuses the aggressive style of 50s and 60s hard-bop with the sophisticated compositional approach of modern jazz. The album "Cape Breton" features seven compositions by composer and saxophonist, Aaron Lington. This album also features the talents of Paul Tynan (Trumpet/Flugelhorn), Dahveed Behroozi (Piano), John Shifflett (Bass) and Tim Solook (Drums). "Cape Breton" is a beautifully recorded small-group jazz album in some ways reminiscent of the traditional small groups of the 50s and 60s but with more emphasis on modern harmonies and compositional ideas. The strong compositions, masterful solos, and the use of the seldom-heard baritone saxophone along with trumpet/flugelhorn instead of the traditional two-horn lineup make this album a unique product in the sea of new music. The Album was recorded in San Jose, California in May 2005. Aaron Lington currently resides in San Jose, California. He holds a Masters (MM) and Doctorate (DMA) from the University of North Texas and is the coordinator of Jazz Studies at San Jose State University. Aaron Lington is a saxophone performing artist for Rico Reeds and was recently listed in the 55th Annual Downbeat Magazine's Critic's Poll as a "Rising Star" in the Baritone Saxophone Category. Quotes: "Baritone saxophonist Aaron Lington was revelatory. He obviously relishes the beautiful, blustery bark of his instrument and his solos careened through the music, rubbing against the orchestra." --San Jose Mercury News "...Lington and his companions are topnotch musicians...these gentlemen are by no means amateurs, and this is a pleasurable album of largely mellow yet invigorating post-Bop Jazz." --Jack Bowers, Cadence Magazine, August 2006 "Great writing and playing all around!" --Wayne Bergeron "Aaron Lington has a distinctive voice on the baritone saxophone. He plays it with the grace and precision of a smaller horn. His ideas are filled with the richness of the saxophone tradition, yet are uniquely his, presented in a modern framework. Lington's compositions have interesting melodic shapes and colorful harmonies. His playing and his composing deserve to be heard and experienced by a much wider audience. Hopefully with his new CD, Cape Breton, he will do just that." --Woody Witt, Apria Records Recording Artist "The Baritone Saxophone, with its deep, low-end range, does not find itself the center of attention very often. There are simply too few practitioners at the soloist level. Thus a new voice on the instrument is definitely worth noting. But Mr. Lington's album is much more than a showcase for the instrument, though he does play it amazingly well. Cape Breton is an ensemble record on which the leader presents a well-conceived collection of original music played to perfection by a swinging Bay Area jazz quintet. The character of the album is one that would suit both those of the connoisseur and those who just appreciate the sound of swinging, spacious jazz music." --Andrew Lienhard, www.jazzhouston.com "This is a CD for jazz lovers who want to kick back and be engulfed with comfortable fresh sounds and swinging combo jazz. What a fine concept - perfectly executed." --Ron Lipka, International Trumpet Guild Journal, March 2007
