Composed by trumpeter Paul Tynan and arranged by Aaron Lington. "Pepper Aarons" attempts to fuse the melodic style of Pepper Adams within a modern harmonic framework. A catchy melody underscored by a deceptive chord progression is played by baritone saxophone, trumpet, and guitar. The head is followed by a saxophone soli and a trombone soli which leads into solo space for baritone saxophone and trumpet. After the soloists, the ensemble plays an exciting shout section followed by a brief recap of the melody. This composition was one of the winning compositions in the 2007 San Jose Jazz Society's Composer Competition. Aaron Lington was commissioned by the San Jose Jazz Society to write this arrangement." Aaron Lington's "Cape Breton" fuses the aggressive style of 50s and 60s hard-bop with the sophisticated compositional approach of modern jazz. The album "Cape Breton" features seven compositions by composer and saxophonist, Aaron Lington. This album also features the talents of Paul Tynan (Trumpet/Flugelhorn), Dahveed Behroozi (Piano), John Shifflett (Bass) and Tim Solook (Drums). "Cape Breton" is a beautifully recorded small-group jazz album in some ways reminiscent of the traditional small groups of the 50s and 60s but with more emphasis on modern harmonies and compositional ideas. The strong compositions, masterful solos, and the use of the seldom-heard baritone saxophone along with trumpet/flugelhorn instead of the traditional two-horn lineup make this album a unique product in the sea of new music. The Album was recorded in San Jose, California in May 2005. Aaron Lington currently resides in San Jose, California. He holds a Masters (MM) and Doctorate (DMA) from the University of North Texas and is the coordinator of Jazz Studies at San Jose State University.
