Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser is campaigning for governor as the state enters the final nine months before the election. Weiser, who announced his candidacy last year, is currently outlining a platform focused on education, mental health and state sovereignty. In a recent sit-down interview, Weiser detailed his concerns regarding the challenges facing the next generation and the state's current budget system. His campaign emphasizes the protection of Colorado's interests amid clashing policies with the federal government, specifically regarding health care and housing. "The challenge right now is defending our freedoms, defending opportunity and what our next generation is looking at scares me," Weiser said. Weiser has focused a portion of his platform on the youth mental health crisis, citing observations from District 51 in Grand Junction regarding cell phone usage in schools. He is also pursuing legal action against social media companies regarding their impact on minors. "I've spent some time in D51 in Grand Junction learning about how the youth mental health crisis is being met head-on with leading work, addressing cell phones in schools," Weiser said. "I'm suing Meta. I am investigating TikTok for the way they've harmed young people." To address Colorado's financial constraints, Weiser outlined three specific strategies: enforcing federal funding rules, seeking internal efficiencies and requiring public approval for tax increases. He argued that the current budgetary framework lacks the necessary flexibility for the state's future. "This is a screwy system. It has all sorts of bad side effects," Weiser said. "We're going to work with the people of Colorado, going to the people to make sure we give Colorado the flexibility we need for our future budgeting." Regarding state relations with the federal government, Weiser emphasized the importance of state sovereignty under the 10th Amendment. He stated that the federal government should not dictate how Colorado manages its internal affairs. Weiser specifically referenced challenges involving the Trump administration, particularly concerning health care. "We also need someone who's shown they're not going to give in to what can often be a bullying tactic by this administration when it comes to health care," Weiser said. Weiser also expressed concern for the economic and physical health of rural communities. He advocated for more affordable housing and fair treatment for renters across the state. "I'm afraid for the Western Slope," Weiser said. "I'm afraid for the challenges we're facing with regard to hospitals potentially closing."
