Consciousness has a broad range of meanings. It can be used in a medical context, or a spiritual context, or it can be used in the context of our level of awareness in day-to-day life. Thom gives us a brief rundown on the latter two in this video, explaining that our perception of the world around us and the degree to which we experience the circumstances around us determines our quality of life. Thom reminds us that when it comes to living a more joyful life, our consciousness is, in fact, more important than the circumstances we find ourselves in. What is your capacity to see relationships between information—some stimulating from outside, some known truths? Can you connect one truth to another and infer a third? How acute is your perception? Can you really see, smell, taste, touch, and hear everything relevant around you? How aware are you of the appropriateness of the moment? Does it invite you to act, speak, behave, or to listen, take in, and assess? We’re fleshing out the idea: what can you be aware of? What is the extent of your awareness—not just the periphery, but also infinite detail within the framework? How conscious are you? Let's use an extreme example. Someone who’s eaten bad food, followed by alcohol, slept, and wakes with a hangover, stumbling into the kitchen, may miss things around them. Any one of these things might warn of cascading dangers or opportunities. Missing cues can lead to disadvantage or missed positive experiences. Our hungover example struggles to remain upright, awake, and likely wishes to be unconscious again. Now, consider someone in Cosmic Consciousness, an all-inclusive state where the mind constantly embraces the backdrop, the underlying Unified Field of Consciousness. We briefly touch this in Vedic Meditation, but with a stabilized inner state, we reach all-inclusive awareness. All-inclusive awareness doesn’t mean annoyance at every flea or bee, but you may notice them. It allows access to information, understanding the proper action at each moment. Spontaneous right action means “right” within the flow of progressive change—not missing out on life’s cues. If we experience all cues, we find the invitation to live life joyfully. But missing that invitation can mean opting for temporary reliefs, like avoiding any experience. So, what is the world? The world is actually your state of consciousness. What is your consciousness state? Not, what are the circumstances? Circumstances are assessed by the Knower’s consciousness. If I think, "These are dreadful circumstances, and anyone here would suffer," I must ask, "Really? Anyone?" What about Buddha? Would Buddha, in your situation, see these circumstances as obstacles to illumination? Using extremes to make the point: to what extent are we conscious? The answer lies in how intelligently we use our surroundings. Can we optimize our environment? Or are we incapacitated by simply being in the waking state? Greater consciousness means more in every way—greater acuity, greater capacity for conclusions based on existing knowledge, and greater ability to gather new knowledge to enhance organizing power. So, how conscious are you? Consciousness has gradations. Sometimes we are more conscious, sometimes less. We aim to optimize consciousness, to expand into the full embrace of the time's needs and moment's demands, responding with creativity, intelligence, and energy, to sustain joy in life. More consciousness, more joy. Less consciousness, more reactivity. That gives an idea of consciousness. And, of course, we could discuss this for hours, but here’s a preview. #thomknoles #vedicworldview #vedicmeditation
