Theodor Kirchner: Sketch Op 11, No 5 Clark Bryan, piano Piano: Yamaha S7X Maintained by Darryl Fabiani at D&S Pianos Piano microphones: AKG C12B Room: AKG C414 Theodor Kirchner (1823–1903) was a German Romantic composer, pianist, and organist who was greatly admired by many of the leading composers of his time, including Mendelssohn, Robert and Clara Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Wagner, Dvořák, and Grieg. A child prodigy, he was already an accomplished organist and pianist by the age of eight and later studied in Leipzig and Dresden before becoming organist in Winterthur, Switzerland through Mendelssohn’s recommendation. Despite his extraordinary talent and influential friendships, Kirchner struggled with an unstable personal life, financial problems, and a gambling addiction, which prevented him from securing lasting professional success. Brahms and several other major musicians organized financial support for him in 1884, helping clear his debts. Kirchner is now best remembered as a master of the piano miniature. He composed over 1,000 piano pieces—many no longer than a minute—making him a forerunner of the compressed musical world later explored by composers like Webern. Deeply influenced by Robert Schumann, his music is intimate, poetic, and often bittersweet, revealing a highly refined Romantic voice.
