This presentation is intended to be an introduction to spectroscopy with relatively inexpensive grating spectroscopes for those who may have some experience with astrophotography but are not required and possibly interested in becoming a "citizen scientist." A brief review of stars and their characteristics will start the presentation, then a discussion of what creates the light and dark lines in a spectrum, and finally, multiple examples of spectra taken with my equipment. The hope is that everybody will get something out of the presentation. Presenter: Steve Barr has considered himself an astronomer since before he could read and has been a DAS member since 2018. His first attempts at visual astronomy were in his backyard with his father's spotting scope. After multiple summers, he finally had enough money to order a Sears Roebuck telescope (similar to a Tasco). To this date, Steve's official credentials for astronomy are limited to a Boy Scout merit badge. For many years after that, he enjoyed primarily visual astronomy, but retirement provided time to expand his horizons. Astrophotography came first, and then Steve delved into spectroscopy and photometry, his primary interests. When not studying stars, he enjoys playing with his dog, Tatters, baking desserts, biking, and adventure sports in the mountains like climbing, skiing, mountaineering, caving, backpacking, and hiking. = = = = = = Designed to educate newer and less-experienced members about astronomy, these monthly events are usually held at DU’s Historic Chamberlin Observatory and hosted by experienced club members.
