These activities focus on the muscles in the face, which is part of the social engagement system. Keep in mind that states are contagious due to the way mirror neurons work. So whatever is going on in your face and in your body, is going to pass to your peers and vise versa. Now mirror neurons are wonderful because they allow us the opportunity to feel into what other people are feeling. So when you pay attention to what is happening with someone else’s face, eyes, and body, you are getting an insight to what might they might be feeling emotionally before they even speak. To begin this activity, you will need a partner, one will be the leader and the other the follower. The leader will present facial expressions and the follower will copy them, so you both should be facing each other. You want to start together with a neutral face, now this may be difficult since you are facing somebody and your body will automatically want to move into some type of relational face, but try as hard as you can to start neutral. Now the leader is going to start with a smile as a baseline and then move into a frown, and the idea is the whole time the follower is copying the leader’s face. Now the leader should start to move from a frown, to different feelings. This might be sadness, fear, excitement, and then track how you feel. Either as being the leader and seeing the emotions reflected back to you, or being the follower and copying the other person’s emotions. Then at the end, stop and think together about how that exercise felt. You can then switch places with your partner and go through the emotions again. So playing around with different faces with another person and copying body language, can be a really powerful tool for feeling attuned to and connecting with someone.
