Alexander Newman is a dual-degree student, studying for both a Master of Public Affairs at Sciences Po. Paris and a Master of Public Administration at the LSE. Originally from the eastern U.S., his public policy research has taken him around the world; from the concrete refugee camps outside of Jerusalem to the dai pai dong, hot food stalls hidden within Central Hong Kong. He is formerly an English teaching resident from a tough, urban neighbourhood in the U.S. Here, he learned to appreciate the balance of sound teaching methodology with strong conflict management techniques to reach out to troubled students, slow learners, and high-level achievers all within the same classroom. As a result of these experiences with these kids and inside these schools he was inspired to go beyond education policy and city politics to learn more about the mechanisms of iniquity. In 2008, before teaching, Alexander also earned a Governor's Citation for his work within the Maryland State Department of Education. He misses the children; he does not miss the cafeteria food. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
