This video explains AV valve regurgitation and common AV valve repairs. http://www.chop.edu/valve-center 0:36 How does the heart work? 1: 19 What is a heart valve? 2:06 What is valve regurgitation? 2:17 Understanding AV valve repair Jonathan Chen, MD, Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Co-director of the Topolewski Pediatric Heart Valve Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), explains AV valve regurgitation and common repairs. AV valves are heart valves that separate the atria from the ventricles. This includes the mitral valve and the tricuspid valve. It also includes complex valves that have developed abnormally. AV valve regurgitation occurs when an AV valve does not close properly, allowing blood to leak backward into the heart. AV valve repair involves surgical techniques to adjust or reconstruct the valve’s leaflets, chordae, or annulus so the leaflets can close tightly and prevent regurgitation. Depending on the cause of the valve dysfunction, a surgeon may shorten or replace stretched chordae, patch leaflet damage, reconstruct commissures, or reinforce the valve annulus with sutures or a small ring. The team of world-leading experts at CHOP’s Pediatric Heart Valve Center uses cutting-edge imaging to view each patient’s heart before surgery and develop a highly personalized surgical plan based on a child’s unique anatomy.
