On May 8th, 1945, Churchill officially declared Victory in Europe. During the celebrations in Gateshead, an off-duty policeman captured Kodachrome film of the event. The footage shows flags and bunting strung between terraces, as well as jubilant women, children, and a few men gathered for street parties. After years of wartime blackouts, bombs, and ration cards, the celebrants wave defiant teapots. On Thanksgiving Day (14th May 1945), a grand civic and military procession through Saltwell Park is cheered on by crowds. West Gateshead was captured in rare colour footage during VE Day celebrations down terraced streets, including Fleming Street and Askew Road, which have since been demolished.
