Gutting fuel filters is always fun. We replaced the fuel filter on the Miata a while back and decided to open the old unit to see how much dirt 5000 litres of fuel leave behind. As you can see older units (this one's from bosch) often used a roll of cardboard as filter material. Nowadays you may find better filtering stuff inside of your filter. The filter was pretty much Ok, albeit a bit dirty as you can see. Replacing it takes less than 30' and dirty filters place unnecessary strain on the fuel pump. You do the math.
