Tatuaje - Havana VI, (Red Label) The name "Tatuaje" is spanish for "tattoo". It was created by Pete Johnson and manufactured by "My Father" cigar company a.k.a TACUBA, and blended by Don Jose "Pepin" Garcia. The cigar in this video is the Almeranters... also known as the Churchill. 7" x 47 ring gauge. Pre-Light: A sweet aroma and notes of sour on the tongue... a zinga! First: Really light off the initial draw (mostly due to the length of the cigar) pepper on the retro-hale and light on the palate. Graham, toffee, barn/hay, coffee and some almond tickled the senses. Second: The second gave off notes of coffee, unsweetened chocolate. With touches of wood mixed in a creamy, peppery smoke. And... a playful spice that pops in and out. I even had a quick noter of sour grape. Third: Strength and spice picked up in the build up of the cigar - at this point...it is expected. Deep earth, some graham and leather. A good cigar for a great price! History: Pete Johnson was born in Maine and later he moved to Las Angeles at the age of 18, to try his hand at the music industry as a bassist. He had been in a few bands, and ended up doing some small tours. He was quoted saying that he "once bought a cigar for $2.50, and had to call his girlfriend to tell her that he was sorry for spending so much money on a cigar!" But, he remembered how smooth and creamy the cigar was. He use to frequent a tobacconist smoke shop in 1993, and one of the employees had asked the boss to give Pete a job. The only available position was part time, but Pete took it anyway. He was only working there for 6 months attending to the humidor and mixing pipe tobacco - all while learning the tobacco business and developing a like for distinctive blend profiles. after those 6 months, he was hired full time, and began running the shop. He later found himself working at the Grand Havana room in 1996. Where worked as a bouncer. It was there that he was introduced to a man that would help Pete to start his own cigar brand. That man was Jose Pepin Garcia. Pepin had made a few blends for Pete - but non of them was what he was looking for. He had sat down with Pepin and discussed Cuban cigars. Pete pulled out a Cuban cigar and said to Pepin "this is what I'm looking for for!" Pepin knew Cuban cigars and rolled a cigar blend for Pete. ( That blend was the "Brown Label") With Pete's approval, the Garcia's would quickly get to work. One month later and the boxes were ready for sale. Pete had convinced the owners of the Grand Havana room to sell some of his cigars and he was allowed. Even after the brand Tatuaje was established, Pete would continue to work at the Grand Havana room until 2006. He knew that in order for this to work, he needed to jump into it 100%. Since then, he has extended his brand with the monster series. Worked with the Garcia's to learn blending and even started another cigar brand called "Cabaiguan". Pete has even added other brands to his portfolio with older smaller brands that never were even registered, but did exist at one point. Pete is even trying his hand in the wine industry. Tho he has not reached the shelves, he use's it at gala's put on by the Garcia's and other close friends. He is even playing around blending pipe tobacco again. A very busy man, with a sense of business adventure. I can't wait to see what he does next! Thanks for watching, and I hope you have the opportunity to enjoy one of Pete's products. JJ
