Close of flags on balcony STORYLINE: French President Emmanuel Macron welcomed Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to his presidential palace and offered him dinner, marking another step in the Saudi leader's diplomatic rehabilitation less than four years after the murder of writer and critic Jamal Khashoggi. Macron's office described the meeting on Thursday evening as "a working dinner." The visit from the Prince of the oil-rich state came after France and other European nations seeked to secure alternative energy sources to lessen their dependence on oil and gas supplies from Russia. France has also been also a major weapons and defense supplier to Gulf nations. The Saudi prince was making his first official visit to the European Union — he stopped in Greece before France to discuss energy ties — since Khashoggi's murder at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The U.S.-based journalist's body was dismembered with a bone saw, according to Turkish officials. Coming after his July 16 meeting with US President Joe Biden at Al-Salam Palace in Jeddah, the Paris visit projected the latest effort by the Crown Prince to normalize relations — very visibly — with Western powers. And vice versa. Macron was one of the highest-profile world leaders to meet the prince shortly after the killing, during a tense chat caught on camera at the Group of 20 summit in Argentina in 2018. They have met several times since. =========================================================== Clients are reminded: (i) to check the terms of their licence agreements for use of content outside news programming and that further advice and assistance can be obtained from the AP Archive on: Tel +44 (0) 20 7482 7482 Email: [email protected] (ii) they should check with the applicable collecting society in their Territory regarding the clearance of any sound recording or performance included within the AP Television News service (iii) they have editorial responsibility for the use of all and any content included within the AP Television News service and for libel, privacy, compliance and third party rights applicable to their Territory.
