Sticky Note Friction

In today’s experiment we have one of our volunteers, Tiffany, show us how two packs of sticky notes can “stick” together without any glue. Friction is the force which resists motion between two surfaces. The strength of the friction force on an object ultimately depends on the downward forces applied on the object. Stacking a bunch of sticky notes squeezes them together so that the friction between the stickies becomes very strong. In everyday life, friction helps prevent us from slipping around when we are walking or driving. For this experiment, you’ll need a pack of sticky notes (two similar sized books, notebooks, or magazines also work). You can skip ahead to 0:25 to jump straight to the experiment!
