In this episode, Jack McLean is joined by Colin Griffin to explore the critical role of the lower leg in performance and injury resilience. From Achilles and calf injuries to advanced reconditioning strategies, Colin shares his unique expertise from working with elite athletes, including Olympians and AFL footballers. Whether you’re an AFL strength & conditioning coach, physiotherapist, or athlete, this episode delivers actionable insights to reduce injury risk and maximize lower-leg performance. 👉Highlights from the episode: ✅ 00:00 – The role of fear and perception in injury recovery ✅ 01:03 – The most overlooked mistakes in calf and plyometric training ✅ 01:54 – Why calf injuries keep coming back and how to fix them ✅ 03:12 – Using ultrasound to guide calf and Achilles rehab ✅ 04:04 – Measuring tendon strain for smarter, individualized loading ✨ Recovery starts with mindset - understanding that load is your friend. The goal is to rebuild trust in movement through gradual, well-planned loading rather than avoiding it out of fear. ✨ For athletes with overuse or poor capacity issues, rehab means hitting reset - scaling back, finding a safe entry point, and progressively reloading the tendon with intention. ✨ When pain is high, begin with long isometric holds to calm the tendon, then move into slow, controlled calf raises that build both strength and tolerance. ✨ Most athletes miss the basics - poor foot contact, soft landings, and sloppy form during calf raises or plyometrics all waste energy and delay recovery. Clean, crisp mechanics make the biggest difference. ✨ Precision matters. Using tendon strain measurement helps target the sweet spot for adaptation (around 4.5–6.5%), ensuring every rep drives real progress without overstressing the tissue.
