(30 Jul 1996) English/Nat Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, during a visit to the United States, has called for Israel to stop the building of Jewish settlements and the confiscation of land so the Middle East peace process can continue. Mubarak expressed concern that a new Israeli road-building proposal in the West Bank announced Tuesday could affect the process. He also said solutions could be found to resolve problems centring on Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want as their capital. Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak arrived in Washington Tuesday, for talks with President Clinton. Security was so tight that President Mubarak virtually stepped straight out of the car into the door of the White House. During a photo opportunity prior to their meeting, Clinton, keen for Mubarak's continued support for the peace process, praised the Egyptian President's contribution. Later, the two men emerged from discussions involving the Middle East peace process and terrorism. Both are determined the peace process will remain on track. SOUNDBITE: The President and I agreed on the need for continued progress on the Palestinian track. As we both have discussed in our recent and quite productive meetings with PM Netanyahu. We share a determination to help find a path to peace between Israel, Syria and Lebanon. SUPER CAPTION: President Clinton, U-S President Mubarak called for the land for peace agreement to be implemented as well as for political rights for Palestinians. He criticised plans to increase the numbers of Jewish settlements. SOUNDBITE: Activities which are inconsistent with the requirements and spirit of peace such as settlement activities and the confiscation of lands should be terminated. What is needed now is to continue the strict implementation of the signed agreement. SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian President He said the thorny subject of Jerusalem, which the Palestinians want to create as their capital, was not an insurmountable problem. SOUNDBITE: We know that the question of Jerusalem is a sensitive and a complicated one that does not lend itself to simple solutions. It's is charged with emotions with all the parties, however it is not impossible in our view to work out a solution that would be acceptable to all sides in the cause of the negotiations. SUPER CAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian President Mubarak said he hoped Israel's new Premier, Benjamin Netanyahu would continue the peace process and show the world that Israel respected its commitment to the Oslo Accords. SOUNDBITE: He assured me that he is going to implement all the commitments which have been signed by the state of Israel with the Palestinians. And although there is not yet enough time for that, I hope that he will continue implementing this agreement because it's very important at least to give the people a good signal that Israel respects and honours its commitment. SUPERCAPTION: Hosni Mubarak, Egyptian President Clinton sees Egypt as the bedrock of the Middle East peace process and is keen to maintain a close relationship with Mubarak.
