When Princess Diana, her lover, and the driver (Henri Paul) all tragically lost their lives in 1997 in a car crash in Paris, the world stood silent. If, like me, you weren't alive at the time it's difficult to comprehend just how big of a deal this was, and still is. 2 and a half billion people watched the funeral, which is about a billion more than the 2022 world cup final. Hundreds of thousands of people stood in London to watch her coffin on its way to Westminster Abbey, about a week after the crash. Without a doubt, Diana was one of the most famous, and documented people to have ever lived. She was so adored thanks to her genuine commitments towards helping humanitarian projects, including raising awareness of the AIDS epidemic, and huge campaigns to ban landmines. She spent much of her time doing charitable work far beyond the expected duties of a royal family member. It's safe to say few had a bad word to say about the woman, which makes a change given the public reputation of many other royal family members. So, what exactly happened leading up to the tragic crash, and what happened afterwards? For the last couple of days of Diana's life, she had been spending them with Dodi Fayed, her lover/boyfriend. He was the son of Mohamed Al Fayed, who was the owner of Harrods, before his own very recent death. They had both headed to Paris on the way back to London, where they planned on staying the night, after hanging out on the Fayed family's yacht in the south of France. Immediately after arriving in Paris, the pair had caught the attention of the Paparazzi. You have to remember as the, quote "most hunted" person on earth photographs of her went for unbelievable sums of money, so people were willing to go to extreme lengths to get a good snap. At around half 4, the couple arrived at the Hotel Ritz Paris, where they headed straight to room 102, the Imperial Suite. Conveniently, Mohamed Al Fayed owned the Hotel, as well as Harrods. From there, Diana stayed in the suite, whilst Dodi and Trevor Rees Jones, their bodyguard, both drove to a jewellers, before coming back with a brochure. Shortly afterwards, a member of the Hotel staff comes to their room with a couple of rings, presumably picked out by them both. At 6:54pm, they both left the hotel, to head over to Fayed's flat, which was near the arc de Triomphe. With them was of course Trevor Rees Jones, the bodyguard. Their initial plan was to head over to the apartment, and then go out for dinner that evening. They planned on getting dinner at the famous Benoit Paris, but after being chased down by the paps, they instead went back to the Ritz where they felt it would be easier to dine in privacy. Unfortunately even in the safety of Dodi's fathers own hotel, the pair grew uncomfortable, with Fayed suspecting some of the other restaurant customers of being photographers. At 10 to 10, Dodi decides to request for the food to be sent up to their room, where they could get some peace and quiet. Around 2 and a half hours later, Diana, Dodi and Trevor tried to leave the restaurant without catching the eye of the paparazzi outside, by leaving through the back entrance. Their car for the night would be a rented black armoured Mercedes s280, which was going to be driven by Henri Paul, who was head of security at the Ritz. In an attempt to throw off the paps, a fake car left from the entrance, which caught most of the photographer's attention. Once they were distracted, the four of them set off in the Mercedes at around 20 past 12. None of them were wearing seatbelts. They had managed to distract most of the paps, but before long some of them caught on and were in hot pursuit of the Mercedes. After a couple of minutes into the journey to a more discreet apartment, the four had got to the Place de l'Alma underpass. At 23 past 12, disaster struck. Henri Paul had lost control of the heavy Mercedes, which caused them to smack into a white Fiat at considerable speed. Still completely out of control, they swerved into the wrong side of the road and the car smashed directly into the 13th pillar of the underpass, head on at around 65 miles per hour. The sheer force of the impact wasn't enough to put the car to a stop - instead, the merc spun around and hit the tunnel's wall, which finally stopped the car. With no guard rail in place to protect against hitting the pillar head on, the car was in a state. Shortly after the tragic high speed collision, several photographers and witnesses rushed over to help Diana before the authorities arrived. A doctor happened to drive past the scene, and rushed over to assist. Some of them instinctively ran over to try and help the four occupants, but many of them instead decided to stand by and take pictures. The Police finally arrived at the scene, getting there at around half 12, with an ambulance turning up at about 12:35.
