The edible Scarletina Bolete and a toxic lookalike.

The highlight of a recent foraging course I did was the Scarletina Bolete mushroom (Neoboletus luridiformis) which might not look particularly appetising with its red and blue colours, but is actually edible (and tasty) as long as it thoroughly cooked. There is a toxic lookalike called the Satan's Bolete aka Devil's Bolete (Rubroboletus satanas) which can be identified by its net-like pattern on the stem. The Scarletina Bolete in contrast has just red dots on the stem, with no net-like pattern. The cap colour of the two mushrooms is also different, with the Scarletina Bolete having a distinct brown cap and the Devil's Bolete having a chalky white cap, though this feature is not as reliable as the stem pattern.
