The S&W model 104 was introduced alongside the model 100 when S&W refreshed their handcuff designs in the early 1980s. S&W's previous high security handcuff, the model 94, used a custom tubular lock and key which offered up to 16 unique keys (only about 6-8 are known to have been made by the factory, most of which were reserved for specific law enforcement and corrections agencies such as the US Marshals. Unfortunately the model 94 suffered the same weakness as Kryptonite's old tubular lock designs, a common style of pen could be used to pick the lock, so for the model 104 S&W seems to have gone for a simpler design by simply adding additional warding to the keyhole to prevent standard handcuff keys from working in them. The model 104 has not incorporated any additional anti-manipulation measures and is therefor susceptible to many of the same attacks other S&W handcuffs are vulnerable to. The Model 104 has since been overshadowed in the US market for high security corrections and prisoner transport restraints by BOA's CuffMaxx system of retrofitted S&W and Peerless restraints. Yet again, escaping from a lawful arrest (or custodial sentence) is incredibly illegal and will only end up annoying the police and/or the US Marshals who have to chase you down. Don't do it.
